Something like this could definitely work – and be very helpful – but it would need to be a huge site with lots of credibility. Maybe some literary celebs involved. A big, all-powerful site that’s a go-to reference would be very nice. I don’t see how a self-purported small site is going to do much [...]

  • Erin Stropes commented on the blog post An Argument Against Self-Publishing   1 month, 1 week ago · View

I’m not so sure this is an argument against self publishing as much as just a very sensible cry of frustration against the difficulty of putting out a quality book that has any kind of real chance in the market.

I posted a review of a self-published book on this site a while back, in which I was forced to point out the sloppy editing because it really took over the whole book. Just like what you’re describing in this post – you want to read the book and get into it and forgive the [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Finders, Seekers, Losers, Keepers by Heather Rolland

Finders, Seekers, Losers, Keepers is a friendly, low-key novel that reads like a cross between a slightly obsessive diary and the script for a melancholy sitcom. The cover is positively adorable, the author photo oozes cheery goodwill, and the café flyer illustrations do a great job [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Dorkisma: An Interview with Maria Bustillos

An interview by Erin Stropes with Maria Bustillos, author of Dorkismo: The Macho of the Dork: “Pure gold. Don’t just grab it for the chapter (good as it is) but for the celebration of everything that is dork.” Nick Maniatis, The [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Curse of the Tahiéra by Wendy Gillissen

Curse of the Tahiéra is a pleasant and straightforward epic fantasy with likeable characters and a plot and setting that are detailed enough to maintain interest from cover to cover.
Young Rom is an outcast because his unknown father belonged to a despised race. [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Within a Sheltering Darkness by Alan Havorka

I was fully prepared not to like Within a Sheltering Darkness. The cover had that dubious computer-generated look, the title was vaguely embarrassing, and the first two chapters gave every indication that this would be a self-satisfied yawner. But damned if it didn’t turn [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Place by Ned White

It’s hard to know where to start with a book like Place. I enjoyed it, that much is certain. It brought me to tears a couple times, that’s certain too. But what is it about? There are clearly a few levels that this book can [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Drowned Sorrow by Vanessa Morgan

I remember as a kid reading a YA thriller about some sort of sentient, evil fog that was enveloping and destroying the souls of everyone in a damp New England town. It must have been dreadfully written, but I think I rather liked it, and I’m afraid that [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Jaunt by Erik J. Kreffel

There’s been a lot of discussion on this site about the value of editing, and whether it’s worth it to have your book professionally edited before self-publishing. Jaunt, a sci-fi adventure by Erik J. Kreffel, is a perfect example of a story with plenty of potential [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Fairy Senses by Frances Ruiz

I have to admit, I devoured Fairy Senses in two days, curled up in my room feeling like a happy little girl again. Frances Ruiz has crafted a delightful little story here, mixing elements of Harry Potter and Anne McCaffrey with a batch of likeable characters [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: The Legend of Jimmy Gollihue by George LaCas

George LaCas spent years playing pool in the Deep South as he wrote The Legend of Jimmy Gollihue, and it shows. The novel, about a young pool shark in the not-too-distant past who takes his game on the road to prove himself to the [...]

  • Erin Stropes wrote a new blog post: Daywalker by Rebecca Rock

There’s no escaping the fact that vampires are a hot topic, and the recent success of the Twilight series has triggered a flood of new material featuring these sullen, fanged protagonists.
Virginia author Rebecca Rock has entered the fray with Daywalker, a novel about Jesse, [...]
