The EBM is already in a lot more places than Vermont: http://www.ondemandbooks.com/our_ebm_locations.htm And this list isn’t entirely up-to-date, either, as I know of a machine not far from me (in a Temecula, CA library) which isn’t listed. The news of its appearance in NYC is excellent, albeit inevitable. The Fall of the House of TP [...]

If the TP crowd didn’t regard SP as an existential threat, they wouldn’t expend so much energy disparaging it.

I think it’s perfectly understandable for the publishers to be enamored of vampires. After all, they’re both bloodsuckers. ; )

“Since not everyone worthy of being published is, there is a bit of vitriol towards the publishers that will not recognize quality in the face of profit.” Precisely so. I would further propose that not recognizing quality in the face of profit is the preeminent corporate virus of our time. Notable victims: General Motors, the [...]

I strongly suspect that literary agents, at least as heretofore constituted, will soon go the way of the stegosaurus and the dodo.

“So if a writer calls his/her own book “wickedly funny,” this is far different from the same words coming out of a publisher’s marketing department.”
Indeed. If the writer says so, there’s at least some chance it might be true.

I can sooo relate!
Not that I have any problem with writing. I’ll be back at it today, right after I take Dad to the eye doctor. And go to the gym. And buy apples at the market. And change the cat box. And water the plants. AND figure out what useless diet I’m going to [...]5 months, 2 weeks ago · View

Iolanthe Woulff commented on the blog post Self-Publishing is Humanity’s Progress (and also the Apocalypse)
“They can start publishing the well-written books they only knocked back because they didn’t think the market was large enough.”
I hope you’re right. That would be wonderful.
However, from all the evidence, the individuals currently manning the editorial barricades are staggeringly uninformed as to what constitutes a “well-written” book. I suspect that their brains have been [...]6 months, 2 weeks ago · View

Jason Epstein is, and has been, one of the preeminent powers in publishing for nearly half a century. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Epstein) Few, if any, know more about the business than he does.
This is an extraordinary article he has just written about what the future has [...]6 months, 2 weeks ago · View

Iolanthe Woulff commented on the blog post If You’re In It For The Money…
“Of course the context is still there–the ridiculous pricing, the sad-assed writers who are spending their energy querying and banging their heads against the wall rather than enjoying the words they write and interacting with readers, the shitty and clunky technology for e-reading, and the masses and masses of sheep professing someone else’s ideas rather [...]

Iolanthe Woulff posted on the forum topic Print on demand experiences wanted in the group New Media Publishing:
I think I recall reading somewhere that Borders (which daily continues the process of imploding) will not stock or even custom-order ANY self-pubbed books.
My novel is available on all the Amazons, B&N, Alibris, Powell's, IndieBound etcetera… but not Borders.
Oh, well. <shrug>
