About

Leah Rae Lambert published her first historical novel, The Unveiling, in August, 2009. Although the book is fiction, real people and events inspired the story. Extensive research and personal interviews provided rich source material. The story follows one family’s journey through the 20th century, bringing to light its struggle to escape oppression in czarist Russia and later the stigma of mental illness in the family. This book is about resilience and hope, and portrays how liberating it can be to unveil family secrets.

After a successful launch hosted by the University of Toronto in November 2009, Leah has made a number of personal appearances to discuss the book with interested groups in Toronto, Florida, Atlanta and Pittsburgh. A variety of bookstores in those cities have taken the book on consignment and copies are selling. The Unveiling is also available through all the on-line booksellers and on http://www.judaica.com.

The Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle included a positive review of The Unveiling in March, 2010. Leah has also been using personal contacts and social networking sites to publicize the book. Feedback from readers has been excellent. See http://www.leahlambert.net and http://www.authair.blogspot.com. Future speaking events are scheduled in Maryland, Longboat Key, Florida and Toronto.

Leah is looking forward to starting to write her next book. She has a topic and title in mind, and now she needs to shift her focus away from PR and back to writing.

During the second year since my book was published, I have scheduled a few events where I found considerable interest and sold some books. The effort in terms of travel time and cost of books was considerable. I have become a believer in ebooks. The royalties I now receive are almost completely through those sales.

I have now begun writing my second book and am happy to be writing again. When I finish, I will concentrate on ebooks although I may want a small number in hard copy. I am interested in the experience others have had and what they think is the best way to proceed.

Leah, I would advise using Smashwords and Amazon’s KDP for your ebooks. Smashwords will get it to all of the major online sellers of ebooks except Amazon (at the present time, they don’t have an agreement). I would use Amazon’s CreateSpace for the POD versions of your books. CreateSpace charges authors very low prices for their own POD books.

    Hi Carol,
Congratulations on the Spur Award. Thanks for your comments.
The Unveiling has been on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com as well as in several Toronto bookstores for a few months now. I used iUniverse and cannot compare it with the others. It worked for me because The Unveiling was my first novel and they helped me structure my time and schedule the steps to be completed for publication once the draft manuscript was finished. The quality of the final product is excellent and very professional, [...]

Hi Carol, Reading about how you began to write fiction struck a personal note with me. I too just finished writing a historical novel after writing research reports and articles related to my work.
