Katherine Gilraine wrote a new blog post: Intro Interview: Katherine Gilraine 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Info on filling out this interview here. 1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published traditionally? At the time that I was editing the first book of my series, I was querying agents for a good year. I’ve gotten good feedback, but not one agent had ever said, “Send me the rest of [...] -

During the second year since my book was published, I have scheduled a few events where I found considerable interest and sold some books. The effort in terms of travel time and cost of books was considerable. I have become a believer in ebooks. The royalties I now receive are almost completely through those sales.
I have now begun writing my…[Read more]

oops, regarding D) I thought calling it “the new slush pile” was really derogatory at first. Now, I do not see it as an insult at all.

Why not talk about what self publishing actually IS? And, for once, putting a positive spin on it? Seriously now, everybody is entitled to their own opinions but the constant bashing (especially in the light of so many recent success stories) is a bit passe. Self-publishing is… A) Freedom of expression. Writers can tell their [...]

I really agree with this piece. When I was 12 I decided I wanted to write historical fiction. Light, romantic, historically accurate genre fiction. The kind of fiction Laurie King has dubbed frivolous fiction. The kind of fiction I read as a break from my life. I am a professional historian, 35 year career teaching [...]

“professional” is an attitude and not a means of publication, my friend.
I am self-published, but conduct myself as a professional. Everyone should, whether we are Anne Rice or some unknown writer. Nuff said. However, I’ll warn you that there is a rather ugly word for those who judge an entire group of people [...] -

I agree that what she did was bad form–and why I have decided to cease to comment on reviews (both negative and positive) from now on. It’s a valuable lesson to learn. However, I agree that the “tomato throwing” at the author is completely uncalled for. Flame wars don’t do anything but bring out trolls [...]

I have a different take on Joe Konrath and other writers’ willingness to tell their numbers. When I was deciding whether to go with self-publishing or give the traditional route one more try, it was Joe’s early posts comparing what he had made on his traditional books, what he was selling in ebooks through the [...]

You know I’ve been pondering the same thing. Every time I go to smashwords, I feel as if I’ve walked into a Pr0n bookstore in the 1980′s. hahaha. The “prude filter” works, but a lot of the covers of even “prude filtered” books are very sexy. I guess even us indies recognize the concept that [...]

Dear Eric, This was a great review of your experience. I uploaded to Smashwords 10 months ago, have had little sales, and as you found, most of my sales are on Kindle. What this post did is nudge me to look into uploading independent of Smashwords to B & N, and Google Partners. Thanks for [...]

Leah, I would advise using Smashwords and Amazon’s KDP for your ebooks. Smashwords will get it to all of the major online sellers of ebooks except Amazon (at the present time, they don’t have an agreement). I would use Amazon’s CreateSpace for the POD versions of your books. CreateSpace charges authors very low prices for their own POD books.
Thanks, Ron. Sounds like excellent advice.
