Here’s something I did with my first self-published book, The Case. I asked myself, of the contemporary writers whose work I’m familiar with, which 3 might enjoy reading my book. I came up with 3 names, got their mailing addresses (one off the web, one from a publisher, one from a university department), and mailed them a copy, no explanation, no request. Just sent it to them. One of them I never heard back from. One wrote a brief but favorable review on Lulu. One sent me an email thanking me, said he enjoyed the book, and after very politely asking for permission, said I could excerpt his email for advertising. I’m not sure how much this has contributed to sales. It’s not an orthodox appoach to getting reviewed. But every little bit helps.
