One of the things I didn’t make clear in my post was that I believe that the major force driving the change is the emergence as a viable commercial medium of the ebook. My assumptions are based on the premise that the ebook will come to dominate as the most used media in publishing. If [...]

@RF – I’m not surprised that you found that incorrect article to be the truth, because you’re about as out of touch with reality as she was. Your comment seems to lump self-publishing in with Vanity. Very old argument and, yes, I did read, “a clear distinction must be drawn between self-published and vanity-published books”; [...]

@ Shirley – yes marketing is the problem, however as with most problems it also represents opportunity. I think that as the market develops the issue of whether a book has been trad or self published will cease to be an issue. What will be an issue is how these books are marketed. I think [...]

The playing field of publishing has tilted, but it hasn’t leveled by any means. The vast majority of books sold still involve the cutting down of a tree and the passing through of some very tiny gates. But it is has tilted, and if you step back, and make a little director’s square with your hands, [...] -

One thing I notice is that sites like http://www.mobileread.com/forums/ get you a lot more attention than writing forums. It seems obvious but I notice that a lot of authors run to writing forums as opposed to reading forums. Librarything and Goodreads are two more examples.
I ran a Find A Typo competition on the site which generated quite a bit of traffic and eyeballs on my work. My strategy (late in realization) has been to build some traffic before I release the book end of October. I wish I had started this a year ago. I can see traffic building and have no doubt it will build more over time but it is a slow 2 steps forward 1 step back process.
I have tried out numerous ideas on the reading forums using them as a test bed for floating different ways of marketing. Recently a post about would a competition entice you to buy a book – got a lot of response – all negative. The point is that serves two purposes 1. it gets me some information about what people think of a competition 2. it gets my email signature in front of potential readers.
On the net I am not seeing much new between: social networking how to’s; book trailers (optional), and hire me I’m a publicist type articles. I’ll post more here as I go down the trail. -

@girlfrombim Yes if you are a foreigner selling on Amazon, then it makes no difference where you have or have not sold your work previously – you need above documents.

Coming “from” tech world a frequent discussion starter is, “how do I monetize my following on xyz.” This discussion is being held at Twitter every day, and at FB regularly. Build it and they will come, has been done – now it’s how do we make money out of “they”. At the moment, Amazon have [...]
