About

1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published
traditionally?

I liked the idea of having control of the entire process, the quickness of it, and thought it would be a fun learning experience. I queried to a few agents, but no major solicitations before I decided to self-publish.

2. What self-publishing service did you use? Happy with the service?

I used Createspace, a subsidiary of Amazon. I loved it because it included an ISBN, uses a POD method, and only charges me the cost to print the book, plus tax and shipping, so there was very little upfront cost and I began making a profit right away. Also their customer service is very good. The only setback is that they don’t do full-color hardcover picture books, but the 48-page softcover I use turned out great, with just minor fluctuations in color with each shipment.

3. What avenues have you taken to market the book? Have you gotten
reviews, interviews, TV, print media coverage?

I’ve had a reading mentioned in a local magazine and a pretty long interview with full-color pictures in another local magazine. Favorable customer reviews on amazon but still looking for some major reviews.

4. What drove you to write this particular book?

It is based on my family history and on anecdotes my grandmother tells the family about her childhood. It started as a senior project in college!

5. Is the book in any one particular genre? Is it a genre that’s familiar
to you?

It is a picture book, animal-themed. I am familiar with this genre from childhood and from school and the industry (conferences).

6. Who are your greatest writing influences?

Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, Chris Van Allsburg, everyone I grew up reading really…
I am mainly an illustrator though. My work has been compared to and inspired by Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Edward Gorey, Igor Kovalyov (nicktoons artist), Fernando Botero

7. What’s your writing regimen? Any tips for keeping focused?

I only write when I really feel like I have something to get out. Otherwise, it’s yucky. This does make me somewhat unfocused, I guess I’d admit.

8. Would you self-publish again?

Maybe. I’d like the chance to experience the big leagues too though, with all the clout they have in the chain stores and whatnot. But I will always be a strong advocate of self-publishing. I think it is the future.

9. Any final words of advice for those looking to self-publish?

Do it! It’s great fun.
