Your guess is as good as mine. The sales were a pleasant side effect. My goal was to spread the word and maximize exposure of my novel. That’s worth more to me than a few Kindle sales–but if people feel compelled to pay for something even if it’s offered for free, I won’t stop them.

There are good arguments for both sides of the issue on eBook pricing. A lower price may devalue your work, but it may also drive sales. There’s also the option of giving it away for free. Henry’s recent experiment with giving his novel away for free got me thinking about doing the same with mine. I [...] -

This is just speculation, but wouldn’t it cost Penguin more than $20k to take her to court? The whole thing screams “scare tactic.”

About a month ago, Craig Lancaster asked me if I’d like to be “the voice” for a book trailer he and RJ Keller were putting together for his upcoming collection. I’m not a voice actor, and I’m not a professional reader, but somehow, some way, word got around that I have a good recording voice. Stunned [...] -

Excellent news, Henry! I’m glad more people are checking out your book. I’ve thought about listing ALT for free, though it’s not something I’d want to do for a long period of time. Like you mentioned above, it’s a good way to generate more interest with a second part on the way, but considering my [...]

Heads up, Kindle authors. A new Kindle forum has arrived on the scene with its doors wide open to welcome new members. Kindle Chat is the brainchild of author and Book Chatter host Stacey Cochran, and you’re probably wondering about the need for another Kindle forum when sites like kindleboards are so popular. I wondered the same [...] -

I feel I must preface this review by offering full disclosure: Until now, I have never reviewed a work of non-fiction, nor a work which falls into the Spiritual or Self-Help genres. Naturally, what follows in this review is entirely my opinion, and I’ll do my best to cover what I think are its high [...] -
Todd Keisling wrote a new blog post: Mark Coker on the Downfall of Big Publishing 11 months, 1 week ago · View
This week, Mark Coker posted a new entry to the Smashwords blog detailing the rise of self-publishing and discussing the broken model upon which big publishing is built. From the article:
If authors – the beating heart powering Big Publishing – lose faith in Big Publishing, then big publishing as we know it will die. By [...]

Zoe Who? A few years ago I took some time off from writing and publishing. When I returned to the scene in early 2009, I found the landscape had changed. Self-publishing was more accepted. The stigma was starting to wear thin. I joined Twitter, realizing that it was an excellent way to link up with like-minded [...] -

Here’s more from CEO Jeff Bezos , from the release: “We had our first $10 billion quarter, and after selling millions of third-generation Kindles with the new Pearl e-ink display during the quarter, Kindle books have now overtaken paperback books as the most popular format on Amazon.com. Last July we announced that Kindle books had passed hardcovers [...]

This past summer I started writing a monthly feature called “Word Machines,” in which I would feature a fellow unknown writer and their work with my network of readers. As an author who will be diving into LSI’s methods very soon, I found this to be a great primer. There is something I noticed which you may need to clarify. According to IRS.gov, the “IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, [...]
