Interviews

Interviews with indie authors, publishers and book service providers in the self-publishing realm

Sarah Ettritch – Author Interview

1. How did you come to self-publish?

It’s an exciting time for self-publishers right now, especially in the digital arena. Not long ago the traditional route was the clear choice for fiction, but with the rise of online bookstores and now eBooks, it’s a tougher call. Since my book The Salbine Sisters has well-defined target markets, self-publishing was the natural choice for me.

2. What self-publishing service did you use? Happy with the service?

I don’t use a self-publishing service. I created my own imprint (Norn Publishing). I hire the editor, the cover designer, and anyone else I need to […]

Operation Concrete: An Interview with Richard Galbraith

Concrete Operational by Richard Galbraith (and others) is the most ambitious project ever covered by Self-Publishing Review. In fact, it might be the most ambitious project I’ve ever seen of its kind, self-published or not. It combines a novel, art book, and CD in one package, all centered around a single story – a plausibly prophetic vision of the future.  About the novel:

Germany Germany, a man who was free, a man who loved, now an instrument in their machine. They have turned him into the very thing he hates, what he and everyone he loved fought against, the

1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published traditionally?

I chose to self publish for the control I’d have. I want to see how far I can take my work without the aid of a cumbersome publisher.

2. What self-publishing service did you use? Happy with the service?

Xerox!

3. What avenues have you taken to market the book? Have you gotten reviews, interviews, TV, print media […]

An Introduction to Elita F. Daniels

An introduction to Elita F. Daniels, author of Tree of Life (Part I).

1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published traditionally?

Given the industry lead-times on getting a publisher and the fact that most won’t accept manuscripts unless via an agent along with the fact that we had our own inhouse technical experience when dealing with book media we decided to head along the path of self-publishing rather than sitting around and being subjected to the whims of the big-six.

2. What self-publishing service did you use? Happy with the service?

Lightning […]

Bonnie Turner – Author Interview

Note: details here about how you can complete this interview.

1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published traditionally?

Houghton Mifflin published my middle-grade novel, The Haunted Igloo, in 1991. I actively promoted it for a few years in elementary schools until my husband became ill and went on hospice. I was then too busy caring for him to keep up the school visits, which I loved. Then the book went out of print and HMC refused to put it back into print. They also rejected my sequel, Spirit Lights. I believe much of […]

Acronym of an Author: jaebi

The following is a brief interview with jaebi, an author who put intense thought into his name for about 10-15 minutes. Since then he’s barely given it another thought, so for the foreseeable future, jaebi will stand for “just another existential brief incarnation.”

1. How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published
traditionally?

I had a ton of time to write my book. Over the pace of a few years, you begin to learn more and more about this corporatized world you guess you will eventually be submitting your awesomely formatted manuscript to–the publishing community. […]

Eugene Wells Tries Decaf

Eugene Wells is the author of The Decaf Diet: Is Caffeine Making You Fat? in which he examines the role of caffeine in the obesity epidemic. In his book, Wells concludes that caffeine drives overeating in a number of ways and proposes two strategies for dealing with this effect.

How did you come to self-publish? Did you try to get published
traditionally?

I decided to self-publish after reading some horror stories about authors who go through traditional publishing houses, give up the rights to their works, and receive no support from the publisher post-publication. Self-publishing appealed to me because I […]

Tune in Tokyo: A Review and Interview with Tim Anderson

Tune in Tokyo: The Gaijin Diaries is the true-life tale of a slacker, gay, viola-playing, sardonic English teacher making his way through the wilds of Tokyo.  You know you’re in for a good read when the promo materials for the book are funny.  A lesson to writers – your promo materials can do a lot.

The memoir is about culture shock, the sometimes absurdity of Japanese culture, but it’s mostly about Tim Anderson’s unique lens into his experiences.  The book is confidently and reliably funny. The humor doesn’t have a 100% success rate, but there are so many quips that […]
