2023 SPR Book Awards

WINNERS 2023

Congratulations to James McKenna for winning The SPR Book Awards 2023 with his dark literary fantasy novel, An October’s Journey: Poe’s Final Gift

What the judges said:

“This book has captured Poe’s style and the literature of the period and turned it into something completely new. The prose is beautifully written, with compelling world-building throughout that summons from the darkness all the gems of Americana Horror writing.”

Congratulations to Sam Torode and Tina Ritchie for taking home the Silver in this year’s awards with their amazing graphic novel, The Dirty Parts of The Bible

What the judges said:

“The entire project has been conceived with such thought and professionalism, showing what self-publishing can be about. Presenting a brilliantly wry take on the stranger parts of the Bible that many of us maybe don’t know that well. The book somehow bridges that tricky divide between the religious and the agnostic reader, Sam’s entertaining story is brought to life with Tina’s amazing drawings.”

Congratulations to E.K. Larson-Burnett for taking home the Bronze in this year’s awards with her beautiful magical realism novel, The Bear and The Rose

What the judges said:

“The writing is on-point throughout, with a vernacular of a voice that doesn’t let go. From the start, the reader is thrown into the pit of a fantastical forest of gore and medieval-ish witchery quite unlike anything else, with all the wonderfully grim beasts and battles one should expect from such a book.”
