The prose is occasionally too heavy with description, and some of the dialogue, particularly between Caroline and Sadie, doesn’t feel altogether natural, but ultimately these are small critiques. For a simple story, Griffis packs in a great deal of emotional complexity, from the struggles of unemployment, financial insecurity, and loneliness to the positive benefits of responsibility, respect for one’s elders, and trust between new friends.

Told with a sharp and memorable voice, this short morality tale is an easy read, but its thoughtful content and vivid colors will keep young readers coming back time and again.
